Description of the Flattening Test Method
The flattening test method is primarily used for hollow products, such as pipes. Its purpose is to evaluate resistance to lateral pressure and identify potential defects that could weaken the structure.
Method Process
1. Flattening Process
• A pipe or cylindrical sample is placed horizontally between the parallel plates of a testing machine.
• A load is applied perpendicular to the axis of the sample, gradually reducing its height until a specific level of deformation or failure is reached.
2. Measured Parameters
• Flattening Strength: The maximum stress at which the sample fails or deforms.
• Residual Deformation: Indicates the material’s ability to resist failure after the load is removed.
Applications of the Method
The flattening test is used to assess the durability and strength of materials employed in pipelines, beams, and columns. It is especially critical for analyzing materials operating under axial loads or pressure, such as in construction and the manufacturing of machinery and equipment components.
